Language bias on Google searches
A presentation by
Welcome to this presentation and thank you for coming.
What are we talking about?
OS,
Browser,
Google search settings: Catalan
Let us begin by explaining what we mean when talking about language bias on Google searches.
What we mean is that despite Operative System, Browser or Google search settings are set to Catalan…
What are we talking about?
First organic result: Spanish
…the first organic result of a Google search is in Spanish, even if the returned web page, which is a
multilingual site, has a version in Catalan, as it is in this case.
What are we talking about?
Next results: Spanish
But wait, no just the first result is in Spanish, but also the next ones. In this case, the second
organic result is the Barcelona's town hall website, which also has a Catalan version shown here as
subordinated to the Spanish by indentation (why not the other way around?).
The fourth result is the Wikipedia page for the city of Barcelona, as well in Spanish, where there is, of
course, the corresponding article in the Catalan Wikipedia.
What are we talking about?
En.wiki translated into Catalan
That's not all: the lateral widget, which normally shows a Wikipedia result, is showing here the translation
(into Catalan, at least) of the English Wikipedia, as if there was no Catalan Wikipedia page for the city of
Eivissa. I have to say that this particular case seems to be resolved, as I couldn't find this
translated widget any more since a few weeks ago.
What are we talking about?
Wrong advice
Finally, in some searches, Google is still showing a wrong advice on setting Catalan as the language for
searches, which is, actually, already set.
Consequences for WP

What are the consequences for Wikipedia projects?
In our case, it is quite clear that the Catalan Wikipedia is loosing transit in favour of the Spanish
Wikipedia.
You can see here the downfall on organic transit from Google in 2022, month by month starting in March,
compared to 2021 for the Catalan Wikipedia. There is a big fall in April 2022 and a steady fall from May
onwards. Note that this graph only includes transit originated in Spain, as it seems that the geographic
location of the user seems to have some kind of effect on this bias.
Consequences for WP
Spanish WP

Here you can see the same graph for the Spanish Wikipedia.
Note that the steady fall in April 2022 for the Catalan Wikipedia becomes a steady up for the Spanish
Wikipedia
and continues the rest of the year, except for January 2023.
You can note, also, that both Wikipedias are loosing organic transit from Google every year, which is
consistent, apparently, with other Wikipedias. Here the question is that the Spanish is loosing less transit
than the Catalan for the same period.
Serious implications
90% loss of transit
As you can imagine, this has serious financial implications for websites that rely on organic traffic to
generate some revenue. In fact, some Catalan websites have reported up to a 90% loss of transit.
It might even have some legal repercussions as Google is selling ads based on
transit filtered by language which, actually, they are not serving.
What have we done?
That is the reason for which Catalan society reacted by creating an Alliance, in March 2023, for the digital
presence of Catalan language.
What have we done?
Amical Wikimedia is one of the founders of this Alliance, among other private and public Catalan
institutions.
What have we done?
Report
This Alliance created a report of the situation before contacting Google. You can get this report from here.
What does this report say?
Says
Monitoring system
The Alliance is working on the creation of a monitoring system to be able to follow this issue over
time.
Until then, one of the members of the Alliance has created a web app which does some searches each week
and shows what are the languages of the results.
What do we propose?
Raise awareness.
Share information and experiences.
Look for synergies.
Lobby.
What is the purpose of this presentation?
First of all, raising awareness of a situation other Wikipedias might be experiencing.
Second, we want to share our information and experience, so you find it easier to look into this problem if
you have it.
Third, look for synergies. We might get better results if we work together, specially when dealing with such
big companies.
And finally, evaluate the needing of lobbying for the defence of all European languages.
